In 2006, four carefully sited properties of unique value were made available for purchase at Alta Meadow Ranch.  Two have now been sold.  They are located along the West Fork of the Bitterroot River and each one has access to forest service land. The residences are situated on the periphery of a beautiful alpine meadow which, in essence, is a private nature preserve.  Depending on your preference and your dreams, you can have a fishing lodge, a horse ranch, or a vacation home in the wilderness (or all of the above).  If you are interested in an opportunity to acquire a very special home in the high Bitterroot Mountain country of western Montana, please read further.

Alta Meadow has had many incarnations over the past centuries, but in recent years it has been a guest ranch - with its most important features being its natural beauty and proximity to the extensive wilderness all around.  This has provided a unique experience for our guests, and our comfortable, well appointed cabins only added to their pleasure.  Because of its location, its grasslands and its sheltering forests and willows, the ranch is a very valuable resource for virtually all the wildlife in the area, and has remained so despite the presence of our guests. This was the result of a conscious effort to minimize human impact.

Specifically, we have very limited fencing and relatively few cabins on the ranch.  Also, importantly, we irrigate the hay fields and thus the entire ecosystem, making it much more productive for both flora and fauna.  It has become apparent that the property's value has been significantly enhanced by maintaining this arrangement over the years.  Therefore, covenants have been written to preserve the land's natural beauty and exceptional habitat now in place.  Essentially, the restrictions will prohibit additional fencing and limit building to the replacement of existing structures.  No commercial use of the property or subdivision will be permitted.

Despite this, as will become apparent in the following prospectus (click here), new owners could choose to live in a very comfortable existing home or build the home of their dreams.  Also, they could keep a small number of horses and/or camelids commensurate with the available space, all the while being treated to an extraordinary wilderness experience.

Among the several advantages for prospective buyers of Alta Meadow property, by virtue of it being a former guest ranch, is the extensive preview available on this web site.  Here you will find very detailed information about the ranch, its cabins, wildlife and the wonderful activities available both on the ranch and surrounding territory.  The other advantage is the unique ability to experience first hand the wild beauty of this land and to live in one's prospective home prior to any commitment.  The cabins will be available only for those interested in buying property.
